Hunter skiing & weather Jan 31

Hi All,
Brilliant sun and cold temps dominated this last day of Jan. Temps were 10 earlier but now 18 with no wind. GM said skiing was excellent with groomed corduroy on packed powder for most front side trails. Claire's was not groomed. Regarding the rumors that many of you asked me about, that snow making is done for the season, the truth is that only patch-work snow making will be done as needed but no full blasting anymore.
The hosers start filtering in here tomorrow for their annual races this week so that should liven things up a bit. The crowds today were minimal.
College races are scheduled for this weekend but not sure where the trail closures will be.
The forecasts are for two converging storms: One beginning tomorrow am that could bring 5 -8" and another on Wed with accumulations still being debated among the weather stations as posted below. It could also bring some wet mix with it but hope not.

From WNYT Albany:
A Winter Storm WATCH is posted from Tuesday Morning through Wednesday Evening. On Tuesday, the snow will arrive in time for the morning commute. Many of us will see 3" to 5" inches of snow - EXCEPT, we could see up to 8" across some locations in the Catskills and the Southern Adirondacks - before the precipitation lightens or diminishes for a bit Tuesday evening.

There's more snow to come after Midnight Tuesday night and through the day on Wednesday. It'll remain all snow across the Adirondacks into Central Vermont - in fact, it'll be a heavy wet snow . However, we could see the snow mix with or change to sleet / freezing rain from the Mohawk Valley, the Capital District into the Northern Berkshires points south.

This storm still has the potential to bring some hefty & lofty snow accumulations from the Adirondacks into Central Vermont. We'll be tracking it hour by hour and keep you posted on NewsChannel 13 as well as right here at wnyt.com.

From Weather.com:

Today: Sun and clouds mixed. High 16F. Winds NNW at 5 to 10 mph.

Hunter skiing & weather Jan 27

Hi All,
We only received a dusting to an inch of snow - maybe 2" on top of the mtn. Today was mostly overcast with flat light although the sun did peek through for a few moments this am. The temp held steady at 27 and there was a slight breeze with some stronger gusts and a few flurries earlier. It is a damp cool day. The skiing I was told was excellent (thanks GM) on a very well groomed consistent edgeable base. Snow making has commenced on the steep slopes. It doesn't look like much sun for the weekend and temps will remain in the low 20's during the day per below forecast. The police racers wind it up today, freestyle competition begins on Saturday and the firemen are here next week. I still can't get my foot in a ski boot so until then........

Hunter skiing & weather Jan 26

Hello snow diggers,
Looks like you will be getting alot more snow down state than we will have here - see below NWS forecast.
I was told that skiing was better today than yesterday with more consistent corduroy grooming although the light was somewhat flat due to cloud cover. Temps held steady at around 28 with a slight breeze. Lifts were fine and there were no crowds even tho the Police Races are being held today and tomorrow - heard only about 52 signed up as this event seems to be dying. The Fireman Races will be held the middle of next week. Snow making will commence tomorrow morning on all the steep slopes (Lower K, Upper Cross, Claire's etc.) in time for the weekend. Half of Ike has been roped off for a mogul course that is being built for freestyle skiers this weekend.
Ski ya soon I hope..... http://hunterskiscene.blogspot.com/

Hunter skiing & weather Jan 25

Hi All,
We had 2 -3" light dry snow overnight as temps climbed from 2 to 31 now. It was sunny early but soon gave way to clouds with only a few bright spots and the wind just picking up a bit now. Skiing I was told was sweet early with freshies on a well groomed surface. Snow making which was ongoing last night is now suspended. I have no specific trail reports although I heard the Belt was very slick on the upper levels. The weather predictions are all over the place but it looks like the big storm that was to develop from the south is heading out to sea with only a dusting for Hunter.

Hunter skiing & weather Jan 24

Hi All,
Brrrrrr! Temp was minus 10 this am but now a heat wave at +8. It is very sunny with no wind making for some good cold weather skiing.
Sorry but I cannot give you first hand trail reports for a while as I broke a toe on my right foot Saturday - stubbed on a kitchen chair leg - tried it but can't wear a ski boot - ouch! Guns are on many trails (keep it dry Bruce!) and the reports from others are hard and fast surface conditions. Localmotion race # 3 is today with the post race party at Villa Vosilla. Other than a lot of racers there were not many on the hill today. Cold temps and some snow are forecast for the rest of the week with an eye on a possible big storm for Wednesday.
Congrats to all you Packer & Steeler fans!
Anxious to ski.......... http://hunterskiscene.blogspot.com/

Hunter skiing and powder alert Jan 20

Hi All,
Best day of the week by far - great sun, no wind, temps 18-22 and fabulous grooming on all trails except Claire's & Upper K27. Snow guns were on in many strategic spots and skiing was effortless. Predictions for our area are 4 -8" late tonight through noon on Friday so get those powder boards ready! Crowds were minimal. Bundle up for some of the coldest temps of the season this weekend.
On a dining note: Van Winkles (at the Hotel) has a new young chef out of the CIA and the food is greatly improved so try it out but suggest make reservations for the weekend. Also half price drinks & free snacks at happy hour 4 - 6pm every day including weekends.

Hunter skiing & weather Jan 19

Hi All,
Managed to ski for a few hrs this am in spite of dense fog on top and light to moderate wet snow all morning. Visibility was very poor on top until you dropped down about 100 vertical ft but was still compromised by snow and flat light. Groomers could only get out this am due to the soft wet snow last night so one could only ski that which was groomed. White Cloud and Upper K were in fact closed today. The mountain was pretty empty as you can imagine after the weather we had yesterday - heavy bursts of rain late in the day. The surface conditions were very consistent on all groomed trails with a coating I can only describe as thick soft icing on a cake over spongy popcorn. Early runs were nice as one could carve up the icing but it soon became clumpy and a bit sticky making for some very cautious skiing. Wayout was nice but one had to drop down about 50 vertical ft to get out of the west side fog. Claire's was open but certainly not worth the risk of snow covered ice bumps which were not easily visible. The overnight temp was about 29 but up to 35 now and still snowing big wet flakes. The roads are slowly becoming manageable but slick. Starting tonight and going through the weekend we will be going into a deep freeze with highs only in single digits to low teens so everything is going to freeze up. The good news is that snow making will commence later today and into the days ahead.

Hunter skiing & weather Jan 18

Hi All,
I got excited when I awoke to 4" of fresh powder and blinding snow but that feeling quickly dissipated as the weather changed over to sleet by 8:30 am and then freezing rain by 10 am which quickly turned the surface into a compressed heavy sugar sludge. I must admit I did not attempt to ski it after getting to the mountain on very slick roads. The sleet felt like needles hitting your face and visibility was very poor. Shoveling the walk & driveway was real work. The temps climbed from 24 overnight to 30 now. Everything is expected to freeze tonight. The mountain looks like a ghost town with very few riding the lift. Let's hope tomorrow brings better weather for skiing / riding.
Until then............ http://hunterskiscene.blogspot.com/

Hunter powder skiing Jan 13

Hi All,
Another great day to ski here in winter wonderland with some fresh lake effect powder from last night on top of well groomed surfaces but a very cold 16 and high winds making wind chills close to zero. There were mostly high clouds with flurries and some bright spots but visibility was anyway okay. Best run was Rt. 80. Claire's which was not groomed was not a good choice today with lots of slick surfaces and hard bumps. Most of the front side trails were quite nice and the lifts were running normally. There was more of a crowd today than usual for a Thursday (There were a half a dozen bus groups up today) creating a slight line at the Flyer but none on the west side. There was no snow making today but we didn't need it. It is going to be cold and windy right through the weekend with flurries. Reminder: Saturday night there will be a torchlight parade and fireworks for MLK weekend so expect good size crowds.
No Friday report as usual.
Bundle up - ski ya, http://hunterskiscene.blogspot.com/

Hunter powder skiing Jan 12

Hi all,
Mother nature provided some 10"- 12" of very sweet dry powder this am just in time for an early mid-week opening at 8:45. The scenery again was nothing less than a picture postcard with everything coated by a pristine white snow. The temp went from 16 to 22 now and although it is still snowing lightly it is much brighter as the sun tries to come out. The winds fortunately never really became a factor as predicted. The crowds were well spread out and lift lines were minimal. The roads still need alot of work but they are quite passable. With good grooming tonight, tomorrow could be a sensational day to ski or ride. Skiing was sweet for about 45 mins before the hounds chopped it all up and then it became quite bumpy / clumpy but still light powder. There were no bad or even marginal trails today - it was all good!
Ski ya soon, http://hunterskiscene.blogspot.com/

Hunter skiing and powder alert Jan 11

Hello powder hounds,
Here we go again: 10-14" forecast for tonight into tomorrow - see details below.
Another spectacular morning of skiing today. The fog lifted early leaving a stunning frosted landscape with breath taking views of the mountains rising above the fog shrouded valleys. For once Hunter was in the sun and the rest of the local world was fogged in! Claire's and Wayout were groomed top to bottom and provided for some great skiing. New snow on Ike, Bleeker and great grooming on the rest of the front side made for easy ego skiing. The temps were steady between 19 & 22 with no wind and all lifts were running smoothly with minimal crowds. Clouds rolled in shortly after noon time. The winds are expected to strengthen in the morning and it could affect lift ops.
Saturday there will be a torchlight parade and fireworks for MLK weekend.

Hunter skiing Jan 10

Greetings powder hounds,
What started out as a very cold, windy & overcast day with lake effect flurries turned into a brilliant sunny day by 10 am as temps climbed from 19 to 24 and the wind subsided somewhat. Skiing was GREAT! The grooming job was fantastic (thanks Skip!) and skiing was effortless. Snow guns were on Racer's and a few other scattered areas but the best of all was Apurna - great snow making job Bruce! I have a hard time remembering when Apurna was so full of soft fluffy powder with no ice. There were swales and moguls as it was not groomed but man was it fun! Claire's was more like dust on crust but improving as the sun hit it. Rt 80 was a dream run too. The front side was all nicely groomed powder on just about every run. The 2nd local motion race was held today with the post race party at the Tuscan Grill / White Star in Tannersville. Crowds were light but "F" was running even tho were were no issues with the Flyer.
There is a big change in mgmt at the mtn with the resignation of marketing director Brian Czarnecki who is going to Camelback - good luck Brian! I am not sure as of when this will be effective nor do I know of who may take his place. I assume they will be reviewing resumes of potential candidates.
Looks like another storm Tues night into Wed and I am hearing 10-12" accumulation - nothing like mid-week powder! Time to play hooky for some of you. See the bold hi-lite below: most snow in the Catskills again!!
Ski ya, http://hunterskiscene.blogspot.com/
Jon

from WNYT - Albany:
The wind will die out overnight, and with a clear sky temperatures will drop quickly down toward 10 above zero. Some outlying areas will be closer to zero.

Sunshine tomorrow morning will fade behind increasing and thickening clouds during the day. It will be dry and cold but with less wind as highs reach the mid 20's.

A storm riding up the East Coast will send snow our way overnight Tuesday night and into the day on Wednesday. Right now it looks like the heaviest snow will fall in the Catskills, Taconics and Berkshires but we will continue to update the forecast as it becomes more clear into midweek. Highs on Wednesday will be in the mid 20's.

There will be scattered snow showers behind the storm on Thursday. It will be windy and cold heading toward the weekend as we return to sunshine. Highs will be in the mid 20's.

Detailed Local Forecast
Today: Lots of sunshine. High 23F. Winds NW at 10 to 20 mph.
Tonight: A few passing clouds, otherwise generally clear. Low 7F. Winds NW at 5 to 10 mph.
Tomorrow: Some sun in the morning with increasing clouds during the afternoon. High 24F. Winds light and variable.
Tomorrow night: Snow likely. Low 17F. Winds NE at 5 to 10 mph. Some snow accumulation possible.
Wednesday: Snow. Highs in the low 20s and lows in the low teens.
Thursday: A few snow showers. Highs in the low 20s and lows in the mid single digits.

Hunter skiing & weather Jan 6

Hi All,
Wow - what a great day to ski! Best west side skiing for me (and others) this season and the front wasn't too shabby either. Claire's and Wayout were both under the guns all day making for some great dry mounds of powder fun - it was addictive! Great job Bruce! The temp was a cold 10 this am and now 24 with no wind and great sun up until about 11:45 when clouds and flurries intermittently moved in. H-B-K was the best run on the front side with the Cliff a close second. Eside and Minya were quite hard and fast as was Racer's. The entire mid-station area was coated with great dry powder. Ike and Gunhill were OK but not as good as the other lower trails. The Flyer which went down yesterday at noon for 1 3/4 hrs due to a sensor problem on tower 5 (again) was running fine today with minimal crowds.
The weather forecasts seem to agree that we will get quite a bit of snow (6-10") Fri & Sat per below.
This weekend's movies in Hunter: True Grit & Little Fokkers - Call 263-4702 for times.
Get those powder boards ready! Sorry, no report tomorrow.

Sunday: Partly cloudy. Highs in the low 20s and lows in the low teens.
Monday: Plenty of sun. Highs in the low 20s and lows in the low teens.
Albany WNYT:

Clouds will increase and thicken overnight tonight and light snow will develop from west to east through the early morning hours. Overnight lows will be near 20.

The morning commute will be a little slow, but not too bad. Light snow will fly on and off through the day, but it will become steadier as the afternoon progresses. Most locations will see one to two inches by dark. Highs will once again be around 30.

Additional snow will fall tomorrow night into Saturday with modest accumulation (right now, we'll say a good 4-6") although heavier amounts are possible into Saturday afternoon in some spots...as of now it looks like the Catskills will wind up with the most snow. We'll continue to track the developing storm and update the forecast.

It will become breezy later Saturday as the snow tapers off. Windier still on Sunday with some blowing snow with highs both day in the upper 20's.

Hunter skiing & weather Jan 5

Hi All,
Today was mostly dominated by clouds and flurries with a few bright spots in between. The ski surface conditions were very nice with powder on hardpack due to another great grooming job (except the bottom of Wayout which was marbles). Visibility was just OK to poor at best. White Cloud was opened with great powder. H-B-K was sweet as was Ike, Racer's and Gunhill. Claire's was very hard, slick & fast and not worth it for me anyway. The Eside trails were also nice as was Milky. There was no further snow making last night from what I saw except on Huega / Dropoff which only opened around noon today. The Flyer had late am problems and was shut at around noon for repairs (bad sensor) via the work cage that was being attached to the cable so F was opened. As of this hour the Flyer is still not running. There were a few more skiers today from bus groups and for the fact that it is "college week": an ID plus $35 got you a lift ticket. Apology to Cru for misspelling his name yesterday.
The big news is the weather as some are forecasting 6 - 10" Thurs / Friday /Sat - see below. It snowing quite heavily right now and sticking.

From WNYT - Albany:

Tomorrow will wind up a cloudy day with highs in the upper 20s and low 30s. As a low approaches from the west, some light snow will develop from west to east late Thursday into Friday. It looks to be a few inches by the time Friday afternoon comes about. A secondary storm will be developing in that same time frame. It does not look to be a big snow event for most of us, but light snow will persist into Saturday. The Catskills may end up with the highest totals around our area.

Hunter skiing Jan 4

Hi All,
The weatherman blew it today - great day to ski with early clouds giving way to bright sun and lots of fresh machine made powder with terrific grooming - thanks Bruce & Skip! The early temp of 20 with no wind quickly rose to 35 and snow making had to be suspended. There was heavy snow making early on White Cloud which was all but wiped out by the recent warm spell and it was closed today. There were huge mounds of fresh ungroomed powder on Minya, nicely groomed powder on H-B-K, Huega, Racer's and most of the rest of the face except Eside which was hard and fast. Claire's, Apurna & Wayout all groomed flat and very edgeable. Everything was softening up by noon time. It was a bonus day to ski - light crowds, no lines, no lift problems, no D or F and lots of ego snow. Approx. 92 people signed up for and raced in yesterday's Localmotion event and the food at the Slope's party was plentiful and very good - Crew did an excellent job!
It is shaping up to be a great ski week. http://hunterskiscene.blogspot.com/

The Albany forecast calling for possible snow is below followed by the usual NWS forecast:
An Alberta Clipper will pass through our area today with light snow showers and flurries. Most of the region will not se any accumulating snows, however an inch or two is possible across parts of the Adirondacks and Green Mountains. Highs today will be in the mid 30's.

The weather patter will be quiet behind the Clipper for the next couple of days before another low pressure center evolves over the Great Lakes on Thursday. This system will tap into moisture from the Atlantic and most of the area will have a general light snow from Thursday night into Friday. More snow is possible Friday night and Saturday as a secondary system emerges along the coast. Highs will be in the upper 20's and lower 30's.

Hunter skiing & weather 1/3/11

Happy New Year everyone!
The crowds and spring conditions are gone - yeeha! Hunter is in recovery mode today as bare spots spread in the warm weather and the guns were blasting since early this am on the main line trails, Racer's and Minya. The temps plunged again from the weekend 40's & 50 to 18 overnight and a high of 27 today with a cold breeze but plenty of nice sunshine. Skiing was very nice mainly due to the excellent visibility but limited to those trails where snow making was in progress. The grooming was good but left everything frozen corduroy as one might expect. Crowds and lines were very minimal. The Flyer got a bit of a late start so B to F were in operation for the first half hour or so - F was then closed. With snow making continuing around the clock and forecast flurries the conditions should improve each day this week. I didn't speak to anyone who went over to the west side but I would imagine it was a bit rough this am. The weather for Friday could bring snow accumulations as the forecasters out of Albany are watching another potential storm developing.
The first Localmotion race of the year was held today with the post race party at the Yacht Club.
Keep those skis tuned and bindings set correctly! http://hunterskiscene.blogspot.com/
