Winter Break - Hunter Mountain

Hello All,
FYI – for those of you who are compelled to watch the pathetic MTV reality series filmed last year at Hunter, the shows have been switched to MTV2 and episodes 4, 5, 6, 7 and the finale 8 will be aired in a marathon Saturday, March 31 beginning at 1:55 pm and running episodes consecutively.
Pond skimming is scheduled for April 7 but if you look at the web cams it appears they would have to push what’s left of the snow in a mound and then dig it out to form a pond. The recent rain and warm weather have really taken a toll on the mountain. Mid-station looks like an obstacle course of snow and brown spots – it’s ugly.  https://www.huntermtn.com/web-cams/
The Copper Tree has been closed for the season.
Happy Easter & Passover,
Jon

Hunter storm forecast update for March 7

Now 12 –20 inches - In the bull’s-eye again!!

Hunter March 6

Hello Hunter Fans,
OMG –What a great day to be on the slopes! Definitely in the top 5.  A bluebird sky, temps from 12 early to 40 now and no wind. The 30” of snow has been packed and groomed into corduroy powder.
All front side trails were groomed except Cliff, Racer’s, K27 & Milky Way. The west side was groomed except for Apurna.  Westway was closed. Claire’s and White Cloud/Wayout were awesome!
There were no lines – skied right onto the Flyer. There were no lift issues and “F” was running too but don’t know why as it was not needed. No “D” lift.
As many of you know there is another Nor’easter starting after midnight tonight and running through Thursday morning which is expected to dump another 12 – 16” of snow but not as wet this time around.
There will also be gusty winds with this storm so power is again a big concern as all of us including the mountain had none for 30+ hours this past weekend. There is also something brewing for late Sunday & Monday.
This last storm has saved Hunter from an early closing and laid down a new base. So much for spring!

Will be heading to Jessie’s tonight for burger night – best burgers on the mountain top.
Be safe and don’t forget to move your clocks ahead on Sunday morning.
Jon

Hunter news March 1

Hi  to all 110 of you on my lists,
I have to give you my opinion on the MTV show “Winter Break - Hunter Mountain” filmed last season which was shown this past Tuesday and will air more episodes on Tuesdays at 10:30 pm.
One word: Disgusting! Same crap as “Jersey Shore”.  Hunter’s family management’s attempt over the past two plus decades to make the resort family friendly has been wiped out by PEAK’s greed to make money any way it can. Shameful!
Unfortunately investors have bought into it, for now,  as the stock price (trade symbol: SKIS) had a big one day jump yesterday in terms of dollars and percentage on relatively heavy volume. Sliding back down to reality in today’s early trading.

Now to the upcoming storm. Contrary to what the website has to say, it will not be a powder day. The forecasts call for  heavy rain tonight changing over to 1 to 2 feet of heavy wet snow with high winds on Friday that will threaten trees and power lines. Once groomed out, Saturday could be a great day! It is 50 degrees out now and sunny.
This storm however will save Hunter from an early closing date.  Many of you have watched the snow melt away on the web cams or from on the slopes.  https://www.huntermtn.com/web-cams/   It would not have made it to the end of March. (See below map)

In restaurant news:
Jessie’s has special dinner nights Tuesday (Burgers), Wednesday (mussels) and Thursday (Asian noodle soup). It is open every night except Monday. https://www.jessiesharvesthouse.com/
Millrock in Windham has been sold but is still open pending the transfer of ownership.  https://www.zmenu.com/millrock-restaurant-windham-online-menu/
Jagerberg has opened with family style seating for German food with wine or beer – open for dinner Thursday through Sunday. They do not yet have a liquor license. https://jagerberghall.com/
Happy Trails,
Jon

The bulls eye for heavy snowfall accumulations will be across the Schoharie Valley and Catskills.  Please bear in mind this is a highly changeable forecast so these amounts may have to be bumped up or down based on model trends…
