Hunter January 18

Hi all you Hunter fans,
Today was another “10” with great sun / visibility and temps from 9 to 24 now with no wind. We had 7-8” of dry fluffy powder yesterday. All front side trails were groomed except Racer’s, Ike, & Gunhill all of which had some guns going and whale humps.  The grooming made for excellent & consistent squeaky powder conditions. F was running today but not sure why as it wasn’t needed. Did not go west – still too dark at this time of year. Friday and the weekend are looking to be a lot warmer and without any precipitation which is good. Expect some sizeable crowds.
Be safe, have fun,
Jon

Hunter - NWS weather alert for Saturday

Hi all,
Please note the following from the National Weather Service for our area in addition to a rare “flash freeze” alert as the temp will drop about 40 degrees in an hour early Saturday morning creating about a 1/4” of ice over which 1-2” of snow will fall.  All paved and hard surfaces will become extremely dangerous for driving or walking. You can only imagine what that will do to the slopes. FYI - It is now 58 with heavy rain, wind & fog.
Be careful, be safe,
Jon

Hunter January 10

Hello Hunter fans,
It was a fabulous Wednesday to ski – the second Wednesday in a row that equaled the best of the season. It was cold very early at 9 but quickly warmed up under brilliant sun to 36 now. There was no wind.
The grooming was exceptional with corduroy on every front side trail (did not go west) and no snow guns blowing to mess things up. Milky Way & Dropoff were closed but the rest offered very consistent ego snow without humps, ice or cat tracks. There was no F or D as is normal for a non-holiday midweek day. By late morning there was a line to the back of the Flyer corral.
I’m afraid that the rest of the week into the MLK weekend will not be so nice weather-wise as forecast below. Very warm & wet with rain and mixed precipitation Thursday through Saturday then a freeze on Sunday.
Happy trails,
Jon

Hunter January 3

Hi All,
I’m baaaaack! It’s been 22 months and 3 surgeries since March of 2016 and it felt so good to be back on the slopes!
What a great day to start the year for me. Lots of sun, great visibility, no wind and temps that went from –1 to 21 now. The conditions were super. Many said it is the best day of the season so far.
Most trails were groomed to surface consistency of squeaky powder and some corduroy granular. Some trails were variable and snow making on some that were closed like Dropoff.
Huega was not groomed and had major whale humps. I did not go west. Minya & Eside were very sweet but they turned the guns on lower cross later in the am.
The main line was excellent although there were some humps at the top of Hgate.  Cliff / Racers / Ike / Kennedy / Gunhill all groomed to perfection. No D or F but not needed. The crowds were building a bit by late morning but no wait longer than a two or three minutes.
The forecast currently calls for 1-3” of new snow Thursday / Friday but high winds and very cold. This could change depending on the storm track. See Below.
In restaurant news: Jessie’s Harvest House (ex Swiss Chalet) has undergone a total renovation and has opened. I will be trying it out tonight. It is now owned and operated by Sarah Slutzky and her husband / chef Phil.
Yaegerberg (ex Cosmic Charlie’s) is still undergoing renovations, to be a German food and beer hall,  is not yet open. The Brewery is now open 7 days a week – at least for now.
Happy & Healthy New Year – be safe!
Jon

Hunter opens November 21st

Hi All,
The guns were turned on again late yesterday afternoon and we got a light dusting of natural lake affect snow overnight.
It looks like the main line, Huega & Minya/Lower Crossover will be ready assuming the groomers do their thing. I am told the snow mounds on H-gate are up to 15 ft high.
I am not sure about Hunter One or the “B” lift slopes.
The guns were turned off on the Belt so that will most likely not be ready. Temps have ranged from today from 29 to 34 with a good wind however expect much warmer temps tomorrow.
Next chance for snow making looks like Wednesday night. (see below NWS forecast)
Van Winkles bar & restaurant will resume 7 day service beginning next week i.e. closed today and tomorrow.
Happy trails & Happy Thanksgiving – gobble gobble
Jon

Hunter opens Tuesday November 21st

Hi All,
Here is the official announcement:

Get Ready For Winter

Mother Nature gave us a big boost over the weekend and our snowmaking team was able to fire up the snow guns from Summit to Base! As of now, Hellgate down through Kennedy and Fifth Ave are covered in snow – snow whales, to be exact. While we’re all chomping at the bit to get this season started, we need Mother Nature to pitch in again.

With that said, we expect temperatures to drop toward the end of this weekend, allowing for another potential snowmaking window which will make for a solid opening day on Tuesday, November 21st.

Yes, you read that correctly – we’ll see you on the slopes Tuesday, November 21st for opening day of the 2017-18 Season!

Hunter opening day update

Hi All,
The inside talk points to an opening next Wednesday Nov 22nd.
The weather has not been conducive to snow making and significant rain is forecast for Thursday and Saturday before the temps drop on Sunday.
The nights have been cold enough to preserve the snow that was made only on the main line last week.
Also note that the annual ski patrol refresher / certification weekend is late this year and only occurring this Saturday & Sunday.
There have been numerous poachers who have walked up – maybe some of you - haha!
Keith & Anita’s annual Ullerfest (burning of skis to appease the ski Gods) will be this Saturday evening behind the Pro Ski & Ride Shop.
Get those legs in shape!
Jon
