Hi All,
Yesterday's rain froze overnight as temps dropped into the 20's and created a dense fog this am. Skiing was rough early - frozen granular with only a minimal amount of trails groomed and very dense fog from the wine deck on up to the top. Where was Marty G in his bright yellow jacket when I needed him to lead the way? It was a damp cold 28 at the summit. The snow didn't soften and visibilty did not improve until 11 am when the fog lifted and some hazy sun came through. The mtn was deserted except for a few die hards and crazies. It is now 42 but cloudy and I am sure that the surface softened considerably. There was alot of snow lost yesterday and many brown / bare spots are spreading fast like the plague. The mtn has announced in its newsletter today that pond skimming is scheduled for Sat April 4 and closing day Sat April 11 (let's see about that!). Sun April 5 the mtn will honor any other mtn's season pass. Heavy cold rain & strong wind due tonight into tomorrow - yech! Tomorrow March 11, Ethel turns 92 - happy b'day.
Ski or rather slush on...!
Jon

  1. A good season for the most part,I actually believe that Hunter management has tried this year to make things better, but always makes me wonder about why the early closing. Its like the management has no idea all the New York schools are off the following week, that most of the other ski areas are closing early and would be a great time to cultivate new skiers for next year. The pond skimming should be done in warmer weather, and there is so many things that could be done to draw people up to Hunter for a few weeks after the closing.Yes ,Ive talked to all the management at one time or another, about extending the season, all come up with such negative statemnets, customers wont come, its only you season pass people, ect ,ect, the lack of enthusiasm for extending the season is deafening. There is a marketing dept that is being paid so put them to work! Try to make up for the way last season was ended,it would be in Hunters best interest to draw in new skiers, and what better time to showcase the better snow we have here.In less than a half hour I could detail in full many events to draw customers in, and if the effort is being made to make Hunter a full 4 season resort,I dont understand the reluctance. Finally the only season pass holders are here is the comment that bugs me the most.We are taken for granted.Even if we were the only ones here,we are the people spending money in the ski shops, bar, restraunts, programs, ect.WE visit the festivals, which ever ones are still left, the wine tasting ,the mountain jam.The community also needs the skiers coming to survive in this bad economy. In a bad economy its proven people do spend money on recreation to forget about thier troubles. And Hunter the town is a worse economy than most.Everyone depends on making a living due to the influx of out of town people. The crowds at the mountain have been good this year, better than other years. The time to be advertizing the mountain would stay open is now, with discounted deals ,fun events, trip giveaways, ect. so people would see and take notice and come back,it should of been advertized all season, but now is a good time to start.
