Hunter - sad news

It is with deep sadness to advise you that Chef Milan passed away in his sleep last night after a long and tough battle with prostate cancer that had spread to other organs. He was in his mid 50’s and taken way too soon.
He was a fun loving guy and very talented chef who ran “The Perfect Lift Restaurant” in the Hunter Highlands for many years.
I am sure he will be deservedly toasted to and eulogized at the annual Ullerfest this coming Saturday night at the Pro Ski & Ride Shop.

Hunter fire up-date

Hi All,
Just finished snooping in and around the lodge. There is the smell of smoke in the air and the damage, at least from outside looking in, does not appear to be bad.
There were some holes punched through the upper walls of the Copper Tree above the kitchen to air it out and fans were set up on the floor by one of those fire recovery companies as seen through the deck windows. The bar looked untouched.  I have no idea if there was any smoke damage to the condos above the Copper Tree.
There was a large puddle of water on the lower hallway floor between the first aid room and the locker room but there did not appear to be any damage to the rooms or lockers. A few ceiling tiles were on the floor and there were others still in place but visibly wet.
The High Peaks room had some fans going to dry out the carpet but there no visible water damage to the ceiling tiles or lockers.
Any significant damage apparently was limited to the kitchen. It could have been a lot worse. You would not know there was any problem from looking at the building from the parking lot and it was business as usual inside.

What I didn’t like was the fact that snow making was not in progress late last night or this morning in spite of excellent snow making weather. It did warm up to 38 now from 19 earlier and very sunny.

Hunter Nov 12 - fire in the Copper Tree kitchen

Hi All,
There was a multiple alarm fire last night that destroyed part of the Copper Tree kitchen in the west wing of the base lodge.
It started in a compressor above a freezer and created a lot of smoke damage.

The snow guns have been making substantial snow on the main line and Minya Konka. The temp this am was 19 with no wind. Mixed rain & snow changing to all rain expected tomorrow as temps climb into the 40’s.
I have not heard of a definite opening day however it will be latest this coming weekend.

There will be no sushi bar this season in the lodge. They plan a NY style deli instead on the balcony where the sushi bar used to be.
Sharpen those skis & boards,
Jon

Hunter - sad news

Hello long time fans of Hunter,
It is with profound sadness to advise you of the passing of Karl Plattner yesterday.
He was arguably the last of the Slutzky era icons that helped make Hunter what it is today and most likely had a hand in teaching many of you how to enjoy the sport as the founder and long time head of Hunter’s ski school.
He was also honored by the Austrian government as an ambassador of that country.
Here is a link to a 2017 article about Hunter & Karl:  https://dailygazette.com/article/2017/02/16/when-hunter-was-the-place-to-ski-and-be
No further information is available at this time.
Sadly,
Jon
