TANNERSVILLE — Village of Tannersville officials expressed concern Monday night regarding the roof of the community’s Grand Union supermarket, which they suggested has leaks sufficient to possibly raise health and safety issues.

Mayor Lee McGunnigle noted that although the topic was not specifically on the meeting’s agenda, he wanted to bring the matter before the board.

McGunnigle said the large flat roof on the supermarket has a great number of leaks, and indicated concern that if not addressed, they could present a public hazard.

“If you go on a dry day,” McGunnigle said, “you don’t feel like it’s a big deal,” adding that on rainy days and snowmelt days, however, the exact opposite is true.

“Every aisle leaks,” McGunnigle said. “The roof is like a cheese cloth.”

He indicated the leaking has apparently been occurring for a period of time, and has now gotten worse.

“It went from ten buckets to twenty buckets, then the whole store,” McGunnigle said, and noted that during a recent shopping trip to the store he found it particularly evident.

“It was in every aisle, dripping on the food, [dripping] on the floor,” he said.

McGunnigle also noted concern for the status of any food products that get wet.

“There may be Department of Health issues,” he said.

Trustee Mary Sue Timpson indicated agreement, adding, “I saw 20 Styrofoam containers [collecting drips] by the meat department.”

Timpson also suggested the structural integrity of the roof itself needs to be considered.

“There may be a bigger problem,” she said, noting the weight of heavy snowfalls.

McGunnigle said that when the weather periodically warms and puts “rain on top,” it compounds both the weight and the leaks even further.

Timpson noted that because the building is a commercial one, the state building code laws would apply to it.

Trustee Gregory Landers indicated he feels the village’s local law system can be similarly effective.

“We approved an unsafe building law,” said Landers, “and I’m willing to back it up.”

McGunnigle said he inquired at the store about the roof’s condition, but indicated he didn’t receive a meaningful answer.

“I asked the manager whether something was going to be done,” said McGunnigle, but noted the reply was non-committal.

McGunnigle said he has since left a message with Tannersville Building Inspector Dominick Caropreso to conduct a site visit and report back.
